Tweeddale Peace Group’s second-hand book sale is a very special community event. Firstly, for book lovers, it’s a treasure-trove. Around 30,000 books are on sale to be browsed over and read again. But more importantly, their sale raises in the region of five thousand pounds for peace and justice causes, with donations going not only to the well-known charities like Medical Aid for Palestinians and Amnesty but also smaller, less well-known ones like the Prison Phoenix Trust.
The sale, begun by Peter Norris, was first held in March 1986 to raise money for Mothers for Peace who were making connections with women in the Soviet Union and the USA during the Cold War. Apart from a break during Covid, the Peace Group has held a sale every year since then.
Volunteers receive about 20-30 boxes of donated books a week, sort them into categories, box and store. By summer the storage space is nearly full – you can see the progress over the last few months in this slideshow.
Book Collecting begins again on April 10th 2026
If you have books to donate, bring them to the 'Hub' (cellar) in School Brae Peebles from 11 am to 4pm any Friday from April 10th onwards. It's on the left side as you face the Tweed. If you need books collecting, Andy Davey can help. Contact the info@ address below.
If you would like to volunteer to help during the Friday (October 2nd) or at the book sale itself we would love to hear from you!
